ORLANDO, Fla. (March 13, 2025) -- Michael Brunker has been appointed to the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Board of Directors as the At-Large National Sport Committee Representative. He attended the recent AAU Board of Directors meeting in Orlando, Florida on March 8th.
"The AAU welcomes Michael to the board," said Jo Mirza, AAU President. "His dedication and commitment to youth athletes and service to the San Diego community align perfectly with the ideals of the AAU organization."
Since 1988 Brunker has been a strong advocated for has youth sports, supporting student-athletes throughout his leadership as Governor of the 15,000+ member AAU Pacific Southwest District.
"I am deeply honored and humbled to accept my appointment to the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, Inc. Board of Directors," said Michael Brunker, At-Large National Sport Committee Representative. "I look forward to contributing my experience, passion, and dedication to the important work ahead."
A leader and active member in the Greater San Diego community for decades, Brunker is known for his dedication to youth empowerment and community development.
"The AAU has been an integral part of my journey since 1973 in Detroit and from 1988 in San Diego," said Michael Brunker, At-Large National Sport Committee Representative. "I have long admired its unwavering commitment to shaping the lives of young athletes. To be entrusted with this responsibility is both a privilege and a calling—one that I embrace with enthusiasm, dedication, and a profound sense of purpose."
Brunker served as Executive Director Emeritus of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA for over 20 years. He was instrumental in raising millions of dollars for the YMCA's redevelopment, fostering crucial partnerships with organizations such as Major League Baseball, the San Diego Padres, and the state of California. His efforts culminated in the dedication of a basketball gymnasium named in his honor at the JRYMCA.
Brunker's life reflects the AAU motto, “Sports For All Forever,” as his actions consistently aim to better the lives of others, especially under-served youth and families. His leadership, both within the AAU and the wider San Diego community, exemplifies his commitment to making a lasting impact.
He has worked with professional basketball teams, major college basketball teams, high school teams, and has created countless opportunities for youth basketball teams all over the Pacific Southwest area.
