RIVERSIDE, Clai. (July 22, 2025) -- One of the most emotional highlights of the day came in the Boys 14-Year-Old 3M event, where Gavin Sprintz of East Valley Dive Club captured the gold medal in a powerful and inspiring performance. He has gone on to capture 3 medals (2 gold and 1 bronze) during the 2025 AAU Diving National Championships. And his story is about more than just diving. It is about overcoming the odds!
Diagnosed with autism at age 2, Gavin is minimally verbal and has faced significant challenges with emotional regulation. His journey to the top of the podium has been anything but ordinary. After years of therapy—over 30 hours a week at times—he found his spark in diving alongside his brother Gage, beginning with their local parks and recreation program. In early 2025, they joined East Valley Dive Club, and Gavin competed in his first official meet this March.
“It was an absolutely incredible experience,” said Laura Sanchez, Gavin’s coach at East Valley Dive Club. “Gavin only started competing in December, and with all the unique circumstances surrounding his autism, we’ve all had to adapt how we approach coaching and diving. Watching him smile and truly enjoy the sport—it brought all of us to tears. We’re so proud of his success.”
Gavin’s mom, Kori Sprintz, has been by his side every step of the way—often helping guide him through practices and meets.
“To our family, this medal means you can’t put these kids in a box,” said Kori. “This moment is validation that these kids can do anything. A diagnosis doesn’t define your child. All the hard work, all the hours of therapy—it’s about discovering what makes your child thrive. This was proof of that.”
Gavin also captured gold in the Boys 14-year-old 1M competition. Gavin and his brother, Gage Sprintz, also competed side-by-side in the Synchro 16–18 Boys 3M event, placing an impressive 4th overall—another proud milestone in their remarkable story.
As the championships continue through July 22, stories like Gavin’s are a reminder of what the AAU represents: opportunity, perseverance, and the belief that every athlete—regardless of background—can shine. It’s a living embodiment of the AAU’s enduring motto: Sports for All, Forever!
