NEW YORK CITY, NY. (April 22, 2024) – Future NBA Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, a one-time AAU athlete, is chair of the newly-launched AAU Alumni Youth Basketball Advisory Council.
The advisory council is comprised of AAU basketball alumni and members of the wider basketball community. The council advocates for the development of youth basketball in the United States.
“Carmelo and the advisory council will help us forge a stronger connection to the youth basketball community,” said Jo Mirza, AAU President.
“I look forward to partnering with AAU and the other members of the AAU Alumni Youth Basketball Advisory Council in our commitment to reinvigorating the program,” said Carmelo Anthony. “AAU has had a long-standing presence in youth basketball and as the youth basketball landscape continues to evolve, it is important to continue to deliver top notch training and events for the players, coaches and parents it serves.”
The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sports. During its early years, the AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic Games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level. The philosophy of "Sports for All, Forever," is shared by nearly 800,000 participants and over 150,000 volunteers.
