AAU Track and Field to host new Regional Qualifier in Salt Lake City

AAU Track and Field joins with Sports Salt Lake to offer a new regional qualifier at East High School, Salt Lake City.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah AAU and Jam On It, the largest event operator of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), have a long history of hosting some of the largest and most successful events on the West Coast. These organizations have once again teamed up with Sports Salt Lake, a new division of Visit Salt Lake, to expand the AAU presence on the track oval.
 
Salt Lake City, Utah will be the new location for the 2021 AAU Track and Field Region 20 Rocky Mountain Qualifier at the East High School Track and Field Complex. The event is scheduled to start June 24- June 26, 2021 with athletes competing from ages eight (8) years old to eighteen (18). The event will serve as a qualifier for the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming to the 55th AAU Junior Olympic Games in Houston, Texas.

“This event marks the first time in years that AAU Track & Field will be hosting a qualifier in Salt Lake,” said Charles “Coach O” Oliver, AAU Track & Field National Chair. “Salt Lake is a beautiful city that draws thousands of people just by its breathtaking scenery. Hosting a regional event here will tremendously help grow awareness of youth sports in the west.”
 
The new AAU Track & Field Rocky Mountain Qualifier is estimated to have more than $750,000 direct impact to the surrounding area in its first year with an expected growth curve over the following years, as forecasted by Sports Salt Lake.

Salt Lake City is home to a thriving sports community and boasts a clean a vibrant city, with unparalleled access to the great outdoors. There are twelve (12) National Parks within a day’s drive of the city, in addition to great tourist spots like Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Creek Reservoir, Deer Valley Ski Resort and of course Olympic City, the home of the 2002 Olympic Games.
 
“While our destination has always pursued sporting events, we have only recently launched Sports Salt Lake which is a department within Visit Salt Lake. Our mission is to improve the area’s economy by attracting and providing support to sports events that take place in Salt Lake County,” said Clay Partain, Managing Director of Sports Salt Lake.
 
East High School itself is a “spectator friendly” facility located at the heel of the Rocky Mountains. The football and track stadium has been home to the University of Utah track and field team, as well as hosted big-time events such as the 1996 Utah United States Track and Field (USATF) Youth National Meet.
 
“We have had a long partnership with Matt Williams and Jam On It that stretches over a decade. The Jam On It team has continually produced high quality youth sporting events in the area, that has resulted in millions of dollars in economic impact for the destination,” said Partain. “Over the years, thousands of athletes associated with Jam On It (traveling with teams, parents, and family) have filled our hotels, restaurants and kept our local stores busy.  When Matt approached Visit Salt Lake with an idea to bring an AAU Track & Field Qualifier to Salt Lake, we did not hesitate to jump on board.”
 
Jam On It has hosted mega tournaments in the area, including The Big Mountain Jam and The Rocky Mountain Showcase which brings in more than 700 teams in a two-week period. It also has garnered national attention for its nation’s largest “all under one roof” tournament in Reno, Nevada every Memorial Day weekend.
