BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - The 2020 AAU Junior Olympic Games concluded last Sunday, August 9, finishing off two weeks of thrilling action across 14 different sports. The 11-day event, July 26 - August 9 took place in various venues across Brevard County.

In the second week of competition at the AAU Junior Olympic Games, the track and field events took center stage. Over a span of four days, many AAU Junior Olympic Games Champions were crowned, and several new records were set. When the dust cleared, five records were smashed in the 2020 edition of The Games. The first record to fall happened on Wednesday, August 5, when Shelby Frank broke an 18-year old mark in the 17-18-year old female discus throw with a toss of 164-feet (49.9m), edging the previous best by an inch.

A couple days later, three more records were broken. Victor Jaimez-Solorio obliterated the 9-year old 1500m record, resetting the previous mark from 2001 by 15 seconds. Erriyon Knighton set a new record in the 15-16-year old boys 200m with a time of 20.33, beating the previous top time which had been set in 2016. Not to be outdone, Sadie Engelhardt set a new national record that had stood since 1986, when she finished her race in the 14-year old girls 1500m with a time of 4:34.18.

On the final day of activity in the track and field events, Jackson Cantwell stole the show with a new record in the 12-year old boys shot put, slinging a 56-7.5 (m) mark and beating the previous high of 56-6.25 (17 m).

Other highlights from track and field included repeat championships from Laila Jones in the 10-year old shot put, Michaela Rose in the 17-18-year old 400m hurdles, Carlie Weiser in the 15-16-year-old girls shot put, Christin Facey in the 14-year old 400m and a double repeat by Reese Vannerson in the 15-16-year old 3000m and 1500m.

On Saturday, August 8, the fun continued with the first day of archery, 7v7 football, footgolf, lacrosse, taekwondo and soccer. Additionally, the Presidents Youth Fitness Program Challenge was held for the first time at the AAU Junior Olympic Games as part of the Games many competitions. Participants took part in multiple physical skill activities, like jump rope, air squats, push-ups and sit-ups. Each competitor walked away with either a Presidential or National award patch and exclusive PYFP medal.
