May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month

May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, and the Amateur Athletic Union is thrilled to encourage everyone to go play and #MoveInMay.

Presidential Proclamation | PYFP @ Home: 4-Week Challenge US Department of Health & Human Services

This month the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and Presidential Youth Fitness Program (PYFP) are focusing on encouraging kids to get up and move, as well as educate them on the important role of physical fitness and sports in living a healthier life. There are so many benefits to being active beyond physical health, like overall mental health, life skills and friendship. As stated the White House proclamation: “We also recognize the important role that sports play in American society and the ways sports help unite us. Through friendly competition, the development of lifelong skills and character traits, and memorable times spent with family and friends, sports help bring communities together, entertain us, and improve our health.”

As our Nation continues to practice social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, regular physical activity at home can be an effective way to improve and maintain physical fitness. The AAU and PYFP want to thank our  thousands of coaches, parents and volunteers that are helping to encourage children to take part in making a healthier life for themselves.

In early April, PYFP launched its “PYFP @ Home” program, which introduced an at home version of the well-known fitness challenge to encourage kids to stay active while staying safe at home. PYFP @ Home has now kicked it up a notch issuing a Four-Week Challenge. This program runs through the month of May (May 1 - May 31) and benchmarks several different movements so that you can see your improvements throughout the four weeks. Prizes will be given out each week for participants. You can find more information about the PYFP Four-Week Challenge here.

In 2018, AAU partnered with the National Fitness Foundation in becoming the first founding partner of the National Youth Sports Fund. The AAU, in August of 2019, added the Interactive Health Technologies, LLC (IHT) to the partnership, creating an official and easy-to-use software system to help modernizing fitness education.
