AAU National Treasurer, Joe Mirza discussed the AAU Urban and Community Initiative Program on the most popular sports station in the New York area, WFAN Sports Radio.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - This past weekend, AAU National Treasurer, Joe Mirza discussed the AAU Urban and Community Initiative Program on the most popular sports station in the New York area, WFAN Sports Radio.

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is known has one of the best youth sports organizations in the world. AAU hosts tournaments and clinics throughout the nation, therefore part of the thought behind the AAU Urban and Community Initiative was to give back to those communities.

The AAU Urban Initiative brings together the youth of the communities in a safe environment for them to participate in sports. We do this in partnership with community organizations, law enforcement, faith based organizations and city government organizations.

For example, Jim Fox, New York Metropolitan Governor AAU, and Joe Armenio, New York Metropolitan Registrar, who both spoke during the show, highlighted the New York Brooklyn Police Department teaming up with AAU to build a flag football program that has grown to every district within the NYPD. Police officers serve as coaches and referees for the children, and as a result the kids and police officers have a better understanding and greater communication between each other.

The AAU Urban and Community Initiative is about building relations and sports is just the vehicle.

Bob Salter and Mirza are joined by a host of AAU volunteers and former AAU members. You can listen to a taping of the show here.
