AAU Cross Country National Championships Race Through Knoxville’s Victor Ashe Park This Weekend

More than 1,800 runners registered from across the nation as well as Canada, Bermuda and Puerto Rico and will feature 250+ athletes from the state of Tennessee, second only to New York’s 264 participants.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (November 28, 2018) – More than 1,800 participants, including 250+ from the state of Tennessee, will take their marks at the 2018 AAU Cross Country National Championships this weekend in Knoxville, Tennessee on Saturday, December 1, 2018.
Athletes will race through a challenging two-mile course at historic Victor Ashe Park, a multi-use park in the heart of Knoxville. This premier cross country national championship attracts runners from across the nation as well as Canada, Bermuda and Puerto Rico and will feature 250+ athletes from the state of Tennessee, second only to New York’s 264 participants this year.
“We are excited about the numbers at the 2018 AAU Cross Country Nationals.” Said Chad Culver, Visit Knoxville Sports Commission Senior Director. “We look forward to showing the over 1800 athletes and their families why Knoxville is a great place to compete in the National Championships and to spend the weekend.”
The 2018 AAU Cross Country National Championships are hosted by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in conjunction with Visit Knoxville Sports Commission, the organization dedicated to promoting the “Big City with Little Attitude.” It is Knoxville’s first time hosting the event in the 2000’s, generating the 4th largest participant turn-out since 2000. Only Orlando, Florida (2001, 2006) and Dayton, Ohio (2003) drew more participants in the past 18 years. These athletes, coaches, parents and friends will bring an estimated economic impact of $1 million to the local businesses in the Knoxville area.
“Our goal is to provide the very best participation opportunities to AAU athletes in an event atmosphere that parents, family and friends can also enjoy.” said Charles “Coach O” Oliver, AAU Track & Field National Chair. “Having a strong local organizing committee like Visit Knoxville Sports Commission is one of the keys to our success and we appreciate their many efforts on the AAU’s behalf.”
