League Playoff Format

How Many Teams Qualify /  FORMAT

NEAAU Baseball tries to qualify about 40-45% of all participating teams per age group/division for the League Playoffs.  We experiment with this total from time to time in an attempt to organize the most accommodating and competitive League Playoff.

LAST DAY to COMPLETE REGULAR SEASON GAMES

The deadline to complete regular season game schedule is listed below.

Playoff Seeding

  • Teams are seeded based on winning %

Tiebreakers (Regular Season)

Tiebreakers are used each season to determine which teams qualify for the league playoffs, as well as the league playoff seeding of all qualified teams. These are the tiebreaking rules used after all regular season games are complete.

Two (2) teams tied with the same winning %

  1. Head-to-Head
  2. Runs Allowed (Avg RA used when uneven # of games played)
  3. Runs Scored (Avg RS used when uneven # of games played)

The head to head statistic is used first to break the tied with the same winning %. If the two tied teams did not play each other, or split their regular season doubleheader, then the runs allowed statistic in all regular season league games will be used to break the tie.  If both teams still remain tied, runs scored will be used to break the tie.

TEAMS with the SAME WINNING PERCENTAGE but DIFFERENT W-L-T RECORDS

If two or more teams have the same regular season win percentage, but also have a different number of total wins, the team with more total wins will be seeded higher.

Example

  • Team 1: 10-2 (.833%)
  • Team 2: 9-1-2 (.833%)

Three (3) or more teams tied with the same winning %

If three (3) or more teams are tied with the same winning percentage after regular season games are complete the tie breaking protocol to determine playoff qualification/seeding is as follows:

  1. Head to Head (Only if all the teams tied have all played each other)
  2. If head-to-head cannot be used to break the tie, the runs allowed (or Avg RA) statistic will be the next used. Runs allowed (or Avg RA) in all league games is used to break the tie and determine the top team within the group of teams that are tied. Once this is determined, the first tiebreaker (Head to Head) is used to try  and break the tie between the remaining teams. If head to head is not applicable or does not break the tie between the remaining teams, then the runs allowed (or Avg RA) statistic will be used to break the tie.
  3. If teams still remain tied, runs scored (or Avg RS) will be used to break the tie.

TieBreakers (Playoffs)

The following tiebreakers are used to determine which teams  advance from pool play to bracket play in the League Playoffs:

  1. Head-to-Head
  2. Runs Allowed
  3. Runs Scored
  4. Higher Seed Team

Please know that once a tie between three teams is broken to determine the top team of all tied teams, the first tiebreaker criteria (head-to-head) is used again to first try and break the tie between the remaining tied teams.
