Chess is Officially an AAU Sanctioned Sport!

04/29/2024

Hosted by WGM Ticia Gara and FIDE Master Ikrom Ibrohimov, students and adults from across the country are invited to compete in the Inaugural AAU Chess Championship

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (April 2024) -- Chess NYC, in collaboration with the Amateur Athletic Union, the most renowned non-profit multi-sport event organization in the country, will host the first ever AAU Chess Championship at American Dream May 25-26. This unique event will introduce unique rule changes to the standard format of American chess play.

“This is going to be a really special, memorable event,” said AAU Chess Chair Michael Propper “We’re getting a unique glimpse at what the major chess events of the future will look like between the expertise of the AAU alongside the know-how of our chess pros.”

The tournament, taking place over Memorial Day weekend, will showcase 10 sections of play comprising a wide range of ages and skill levels. This will allow all participants to compete against players of similar skill levels, fostering the spirit of competition. The event will employ grandmaster-style (armageddon) tiebreaks for each game. The high percentage of draws has long been an albatross around the neck of the game of chess and this unique format ensures all games have decisive results.

Players will also have the opportunity to participate in chess strategy and competitive skills building workshop events and again, like the Grandmaster World Championships everything will take place in full view of all in attendance. The event will also feature side events, Chess vendors, and open play making it a hub for chess enthusiasts even outside of the competition.
