Multiple AAU events and leaders nominated, voting ends January 2, 2024

Emerging Sports Events Industry Leader
Jo Mirza, AAU’s 49th President, is nominated as an Emerging Sports Events Industry Leader. President Mirza’s first year as AAU president has been eventful, and he has elevated the organization to new heights.

As a part of the AAU Urban Initiative, AAU Basketball held the innovative new 3v3 basketball tournament in the middle of Times Square in September. The tournament kicked off an important week in New York for AAU, as the 93rd AAU Sullivan Award Ceremony was hosted at the historic New York Athletic Club.

He also entered the AAU into new partnerships with the International School Sports Federation (ISF) and Collegiate Hockey Federation (CHF). With ISF, the partnership was made to establish a global multi-sport event program for youth annually, and with CHF the AAU launched AAU College Hockey, a new model of collegiate club hockey in the U.S.

Best Live or Virtual Sporting Event
The AAU Junior Olympic Games, the largest multi-sport event for youth in the U.S, is nominated for Best Live or Virtual Sports Event. In the summer of 2023, the 11-day event brought in 14,500 participants and tens of thousands of attendees to the Des Moines, Iowa community.

In the summer of 2024, the event – in its 58th year – returns to Greensboro, North Carolina. It will be the third time Greensboro will play host for the event and the fifth time they are held in North Carolina.

The Most Anticipated Sporting Event to Watch
The AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships is nominated for Most Anticipated Sports Event to Watch. The 50th edition of the event held in July and August of 2023 saw more than 95,000 athletes and coaches converge at the Orange County Convention Center over a 3-week period. A record turnout, continuing to hold its title as the world’s largest volleyball tournament. The 2024 edition promises to be can’t miss, including a projected record of boys’ teams in attendance.

This year saw over 5,000 teams compete, which led to over 200,000 attendees positively impacting the local community and its businesses, shops, and restaurants. We are proud of how the event has grown and evolved, and we know our athletes are eagerly anticipating 2024 Nationals.

SportsEvents Magazine has honored AAU events and leaders since 2017. Prior to this year, AAU won Readers’ Choice Awards in 2020 for the AAU Junior Olympic Games and 46th AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships.
