06/16/2023

Maryland District AAU volunteer, Beverley Vincent served at the local and national levels of the AAU.

JUNE 9, 2023 - It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague, teammate, and friend, Beverley Vincent, who passed away on June 9, 2023. Share to her Life Tribute Wall.

In 2007, Beverley joined the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in the Maryland AAU District.  She was a resolute and committed volunteer for the Maryland District where she dedidicated her time, support, and, ultimately, promoted the district as well as the national AAU organization in various capacities:

Positions held for the Maryland District AAU
  • Executive Officer and Registrar
  • Boys Basketball Commissioner
  • Boys Basketball Assistant Commissioner
  • Finance Committee Member
  • District Election Chairperson
  • Tournament Assistant for 7U & 8U Boys Basketball World Championship
  • Swimming and Diving Sport Director Assistant
  • Banquet Committee Member
Position held for the National AAU
  • National AAU Girls Basketball Commissioner
  • National Registration Committee
Beverley trained as an AAU Boys Basketball Tournament Assistant Commissioner under Maryland AAU District Governor and Boys Basketball Sport Director, Ben DuBose and Past 1st Lieutenant Governor, McCarroll Nole.  She served faithfully on the Maryland District AAU Banquet Committee, overseeing the coordination for floor decorum and decorations.

Through the years, Beverly attended numerous AAU National Conventions and the Leadership Conferences. Her warm and engaging spirit had a way of making every trip fun for those who travelled with her.

While serving as an AAU volunteer, Beverley received several awards in recognition of her outstanding service to the organization and its members:
  • 2012 President's National Leadership Award
  • Maryland District AAU Volunteer of the Year Award
  • Maryland District AAU Governor’s Award

Recently, Beverley was honored with the Benjamin F. DuBose, Jr.  Overcoming Adversity Award given out to a member of the MAryland AAU community who has demonstrated integrity, courage, and determination in overmoing adversity,.

The award, named in honor of Beverly's god-brother, longtime AAU volunteer / leader, and cancer-survivor, Ben DuBose, focuses on victim's of severe life circumstances, live threatening organic diseases, or other impairing phyiscal injuries.

In 2019, Beverley’s declining health limited her duties with the Maryland District AAU. However, she continued to serve while she was hospitalized. Throughout her recovery and the COVID-19 pandemic, her dedication to church, community and AAU was uncompromising, as she attended virtual meetings and continued to volunteer for events (when and where her health permitted her to do so).

Beverley had a love of family and was devoted to her son, Roderick (Roddy) and the rest of her family, as well as for her pastor, Dr. Gregory B. Perkins and her extended church family.  For many years, she served as the Executive Administrator of the historic Saint Paul Community Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She took great pride in her role with the church and was known to correct any persons who attempted to minmize her key contributions by calling her an 'assistant' or 'secretary.'

Beverley will be sorely missed by her AAU family, but we will always fondly remember her warm, friendly smile, her kindness, generosity, and her dedication to helping whomever and wherever she could. A truly remarkable person, her passing has deeply affected all who knew her.

We take comfort in knowing that Beverley's heavenly Father has welcomed her home with open arms, and great is her reward. May she rest in peace, knowing she lived a good life and 'fought the good fight.'
