KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (November 28, 2022) – The best cross country runners from around the country have made their way to Knoxville, Tennessee to compete in the 2022 AAU Cross Country National Championships.
On Saturday, December 3, competitors will take their marks and race through the historic, Victor Ashe Park. The challenging two-mile course is located in the heart of Knoxville, Tennessee.
This year marks the third time that Knoxville has played host of the AAU Cross Country Nationals. Each year the event draws more than 1,500 athletes who travel from all around the country for an opportunity to win an AAU National Championship. Thirty-four states will be represented this year.
“Knoxville is a town that has something for everyone, and we look forward to showing the athletes and their families why our city is a great place to visit and compete,” said Chad Culver, Visit Knoxville Sports Commission Senior Director.
Athletes will be separated into eight (8) divisions: 6 & under Boys and Girls, 7-8 year old Boys and Girls, 9-10 year old Boys and Girls, 11-12 year old Boys and Girls, 13-14 year old Boys and Girls, 15-18 year old Men and Women, Open/Masters Division, and the AAU Parents/Coaches Run.
The race schedule will be kicked off by the Open/Master Division running a 5K at 8:20 a.m. Following them will be the 15-18 year old division’s 5K, 13-14 year old 4K, 11-12 year old 3K, 9-10 year old 3K, 7-8 year old 2K, and the 6 & under 1K. The event will be capped off by the AAU Parents/Coaches competing in a 3K run. AAU National Championship medals will be awarded to the first 25 individual places for all divisions. A team trophy will be presented to the teams in each age division that finish in 1st – 3rd place. All American patches will be given to the top 8 individual finishers in each age division, and an Overall Team Champion will be crowned.

Joining the athletes in Knoxville will be Olympian, Jose “Tony” Parrilla. Parrilla competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The Olympian will be at Victor Ashe Park signing autographs and meeting athletes.
“This has been a really big family for me,” Parrilla said. “AAU is a great organization that starts at the grassroots and can take you all the way up to the highest levels. And I thank AAU for everything they have done for me."
